The idea

"In 2013, I undertook my first hiking tour through Southern Europe. At that time, I walked from Bingen on the Rhine to the southernmost point of Europe on the Greek island of Gavdos. Shortly afterwards, I unfortunately had knee surgery and was no longer allowed to put any weight on my knee joint, so I looked for alternatives to hiking. So out of necessity I discovered cycling, which works wonderfully."

Anton Bellroth, 68

Since then, we call Anton Bellroth "Turbo Toni". You can read what he is experiencing and where he is at any time on our site. We are his companions on the Western European tour.

Anton Bellroth, 68, is back on August 04, 2022. The cyclist who collected donations for the Kinderkrebshilfe Mainz e.V. this year and covered 7,148 kilometers. From Bingen via France, Portugal, Spain, Andorra and back again he has been on the road with an ordinary bicycle without support for three months. In rain, storms and sometimes heat at temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius.

During his tour he collected 8,000 euros. We donated 2,000 euros and rounded this amount up to 10,000 euros. The money will be used for children with cancer and their families. On the picture you see from left to right Stephanie Dreyer, Managing Director of Vermonde GmbH, Anton Bellroth and Lara Eberl, Kinderkrebshilfe Mainz e.V. at the handover of the donation.

The last stage: Via Saarlouis to Bingen (507 km)

On the penultimate stage in France, a friend of Anton Bellroth picks up his luggage. Anton rides the distance from France to Saarlouis with only some tools, a spare tube and 4.5 liters of water. In Saarlouis he spends a few days with friends. After that, the journey continues along the Nahe River: from its source to where it flows into the Rhine. Anton Bellroth's fundraising ride for the benefit of Kinderkrebshilfe Mainz e.V. is thus over.

From Andorra to Nuits-Saint-Georges and Venarey-Les-Laumes (897 km): Two twin towns of Bingen await

"Now it's all downhill," Anton Bellroth tells us after reaching the highest point of his tour and arriving in Andorra. The weather is not so good, it's raining. The 68-year-old takes two days off here and walks instead of cycling.

The journey continues to France. In Bingen's twin town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, representatives of the town are already waiting for the cyclist. The community of 6,000 inhabitants has been one of Bingen's six European twin towns since 1960. Nuits-Saint-Georges has a lot in common with the wine town on the Rhine: great wines, delicious food and friendly people. The last ones are preparing a reception for Anton Bellroth, where wine might be drunk, too.

From Nuits-Saint-Georges we go to the next twin town of Bingen - Venarey-Les Laumes. This small village (about 3,000 inhabitants) originally established a friendship with Bingerbrück, which is now a district of Bingen. It is said that this partnership is really fruitful: almost every family in Bingerbrück has contacts with a family in Venarey-Les-Laumes. Anton Bellroth is also warmly welcomed in this community.

From Beniarjó to Andorra (343 km): The highest mountain of the donation tour

Anton Bellroth has "arrived in good health" in Andorra. The small principality between Spain and France lies at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters above sea level in the middle of the Pyrenees.

Alicante - Beniarjó (117 km): Impressive mountains and imposing traffic circles

From Tordesillas to Gibraltar (1,200 km): The last sausage

From Miranda de Ebro to Tordesillas (251 km): "No more Google Maps!"

The product keeps the almost 68-year-old in good shape. Anton has to eat a salty diet on the way, as he loses a lot of fluid through sweating during the day. Salami sausage and chips are on his menu quite often for this reason.

From Irun to Miranda de Ebro (168 km): Beaches and the Way of St James

Anton Bellroth is in Spain. It took him exactly one month to get from Bingen to Spain. The beach in San Sebastian is still empty. He decides to take the Way of St. James, on which "some cyclists are on the road", reports "Turbo-Toni".

From Royan via Andorra to Spain (333 km): heat and two mountain crossings

Almost every French town welcomes our "Turbo Toni" with a church worth seeing. In Vendays it is Èglise Saint Seurin. In 32 degree heat, Anton keeps cycling. His destination this time is the Spanish border. He wants to cross it soon. The 68-year-old tells us that he will sleep in a tent at the "Hotel Nature".

Shortly before Andorra, Anton has to cross two mountains. On this day, he takes TurboForm. The preparation helps him to increase his performance in a natural way.

From Soudan to Royan (291 km): The missed ferry

"Turbo Toni" shows performance. On the stage, the 68-year-old rides almost 60 km without a break. In Bourg Chapon, the cyclist looks forward to a sumptuous meal. Anyone who has cycled up to 100 kilometres a day for a month is allowed to treat himself to a bratwurst with chips every now and then. "I also lose a lot of fluid through sweating and therefore need salt," says Bellroth.

The last stop on this stage is Royan. The town is only a few kilometres away from the long sandy beaches of the Atlantic. The ports of La Rochelle and Bordeaux are also not far away. The strategically important location of Royan was recognised by the German soldiers during World War 2 and they took possession of the town in 1940. Many bunkers were built to keep the town under German control as long as possible. Numerous bombardments by the Allies completely destroyed Royan.

On the beautiful sandy beach there is no trace of the war. Here our "Turbo-Toni" has to wait two hours for the next ferry. The last one left right under his nose.

From Rouen to Soudan (319 km): New bike and beautiful churches

Sometimes you can't escape your fate. Despite numerous repairs, the bicycle is no longer any good. It is not possible to continue riding with the old bike. "After several breakdowns, I had to part with the old bike." We support Anton in buying a new bicycle. The tour of Western Europe and the collection of donations for the Children's Cancer Aid can continue!

On this stage, "Turbo Toni" passes beautiful churches: Èglise Saint-Etienne in La Meilleraye-de-Bretagne, La Meilleraye-de-Bretagne in Les Touches or Église Saint-Pierre in Petit-Mars.

The weather is mostly mixed. When Anton takes a trip to Le Mont-Saint-Michel, it is grey and windy. But that hardly bothers the spry pensioner: "Even with a strong headwind, I'm in a good mood," he says.

From Dunkerque to Rouen (256 km): Cramps and bunkers

Anton Bellroth fährt an wunderschönen Orten vorbei.

In Wimereux, "Turbo Toni" cycles past the ruins of a World War II bunker and the beach of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Around Dieppe it becomes really rural: pastures full of horses, cattle and cows. Anton Bellroth even sees breeding swans on his bicycle tour.

"Turbo Toni" spends the night almost every day in his tent, which he has hanging on his bicycle. Unfortunately, the nights are still a bit chilly and he gets cramps. The next upcoming nights are therefore planned in hotels, "with hot towels around his thighs", he tells us from the road.

From Bingen to Dunkerque (533 km): Crash and breakdowns
